Last titles go to Craughwell, Loughrea and Ardrahan!   11/12/2012

There was bonfires burning brightly over the weekend in three parishes as the last 3 county championships were decided.

The Swan Leisure U21A final turned out to be a cracker, in which a powerful team performance saw Craughwell defeat holders and favourites St. Thomas'. The sides were level at 0-7 to 0-7 at the interval, but Craughwell took control in the second half and led by 2-13 to 0-11 with 5 minutes to go. Although they looked home and dry, good champions never go down without a fight and that is exactly what St. Thomas did. They struck for 2 late goals, but it was too little too late, and so a superb victory for Craughwell on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-11.

In the Gullane Hotel Junior A Championship Final, it was the Loughrea who triumphed over Barna-Furbo by 1-9 to 1-7. It was the Connemara side who led at the interval by 1-4 to 0-6, but Loughrea are a never-say-die side and they battled their way back into the tie with some great hurling. This victory might make up for some of the disappointment from their recent senior final defeat and sees them bounce right back up to the intermediate ranks. Barna-Furbo had a great year and can be proud of their exploits as they have now firmly established themselves as one of the countys top junior clubs. This years run will help further with the development of hurling west of the Corrib and we are sure they will be back.

Also decided this weekend was the replay of the Gullane's Hotel Junior B Final between Ardrahan and Killimor. After the previous weekends draw, this match was again a tight tense affair with the Blues coming out on top for a great win. The foundation to Ardrahan's win was their great start which saw them lead 1-4 to 0-0 after 15 minutes. It was always going to be difficult for Killimor to pull back such a margin in the month of December, and although they did manage to outscore their opponents for the remainder of the match, it was just that bit too much to overtake them on the final whistle. So Ardrahan claim their first adult title in over 30 years on a final scoreline of 1-11 to 0-9.
