Gullanes Hotel Junior B previews   02/11/2012

He's back and he's Wingback, and here he brings us previews of this weekend's GULLANE's HOTEL Junior B hurling semi-final and quarter-final ties.

Ardrahan v Salthill-Knocknacarra, Junior B semi-final

This Saurday, Ardrahan and Salthill-Knocknacarra clash in the first of this years Gullanes Hotel Junior B semi-finals in Ballindereen. Both sides came through tough quarter-finals last weekend when Ardrahan defeated Cappataggle and Salthill accounted for Oranmore-Maree.

Ardrahan eventually overcame a resilient Cappy outfit on the scoreline of 2-06 to 1-06 which shows scores were hard to come by and even as the game closed out both teams were within grasp of victory with Ardrahan just holding on. Salthill, if you pardon the pun, are the side "making all the waves" in this years championship and last weeks four point win over Oranmore-Maree was no mean feat as believe me the latter were no bad side. That said, the saying "goals win games" certainly is true and Salthill were very deserving of their win.

A county final place is up for grabs in Ballindereen on Saturday with both sides capable of doing the business, and what ever shade of blue is victorious it won't be by much.

Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry v Killimor, Junior B quarter-final

The last of this years Gullanes Hotel Junior B quarter-finals is to be decided on Sunday in Loughrea. East Galway is bracing itself for another local derby that would be well worth going to see. There will be no shortage of drama, skill or heart when these two rivals Killimor and Tynagh Abbey Duniry meet.
Killimor finished second in Group B with two wins and two draws, while TAD also finished in second place in Group D with two wins and a draw. At the beginning of the year I thought these two teams should make the knockout stages and even be title contenders.

Tynagh Abbey Duniry will want to get back to a semi-final to try make up for their defeat to eventual Junior B Champions Michael Breathnachs. They have a good blend of youth and experience and will have added a few players to their squad after their Junior C team bowed out of  the Championship two weeks ago, as well as some of last years title winning U21 side who will have some big game experience.

Rivals Killimor are in no way to be taken lightly - I've seen them playing this year and they are capable of beating several Junior A teams such is their strength and hunger for glory. They have a squad who probably have underachieved in recent years with the players they have and they will be out to rid themselves of that tag on Sunday.

The winner faces Sarsfields in the semi-final, but both Clubs are only thinking of Sunday and who will have bragging rights in East Galway for the next twelve months!!!

GROUP A
Qualified:
Beagh (group winners), Abbeyknockmoy and St. Thomas.

Was this the group of the season?
There was practically nothing to seperate these 6 sides, but only 3 could get out. How close this group was that even the top side Beagh and bottom side Craughwell drew in their final matches, and only 3 points separated 1st place and 6th place.
Although Beagh lost their opener, they regrouped well and won their 3 middle matches. Abbeyknockmoy finish second, with their two defeats to bottom two sides Craughwell and Spideal. St. Thomas' pip Spideal for the 3rd place spot with a final match draw. Kilnadeema-Leitrim, An Spideal and Craughwell all finish one point behind St. Thomas in a season of "what could have been".
