GULLANES HOTEL Junior C semi-finals time!   17/10/2012

While all the talk in the last few weeks may have been about the Senior and Intermediate Quarter Finals, we should spare a thought for Junior teams across the county who were just as busy preparing for the knockout stages of their grades. Junior Hurling is an area of our GAA that doesn't get the publicity it deserves and more often than not these Junior A, B, C and C1 hurlers train just as hard and give just as much commitment to their teams as most Senior and Intermediate hurlers do.

Junior Hurling Standards in all grades have improved immensely in the last decade and it's been taken very seriously by players and clubs alike across the county. The emergence of successful junior teams west of the Corrib is good evidence of this. Perhaps we will go into this in more detail another time as it's something worth looking at in my opinion.

However, this weekend the GULLANE'S HOTEL Junior C Semi Finals are down for decision and by all accounts any of the four teams left are capable of getting to the Final.

Firstly in Gort on Saturday the men of Athenry will take on Tynagh Abbey Duniry. Athenry, who easily overcame Ballindereen in the quarter-final, topped their group and have already beaten TAD when the two sides met in the first group game. The Athenry men have been strongly rumoured as the team to beat this year, and with some household names on board will want to make up for last years final defeat to Gort.  That said TAD themselves, who defeated Clarinbridge in their quarter-final, have been very impressive and according to sources the 2011 C1 Champions didn't feel they performed against Athenry the first day and are out to make amends.

The other semi-final, on in Killimor also Saturday, sees Mullagh, who beat a good Ahascragh/Fohenagh outfit in their quarter-final, take on near neighbours Meelick/Eyrecourt and these two great rivals are bound to bring this clash right down to the wire to decide the winner. Mullagh will feel they let it slip in last years semi final and with a good mix of youth and experience, some of whom have graced Croke Park in the past, they are sure to be full of confidence and hoping to get the weekend in Mullagh off to a good start - their Seniors are playing their replay on Sunday and their Junior A's are already through to a semi-final so things are certainly buzzing over there.  Their opponents Meelick/Eyrecourt topped the group and defeated Mullagh in doing so, and will feel they have a chance, but injuries and emigration have hit them in the last few weeks but those men from the far east of the county won't lie down easily. They overcame Loughrea in the last eight and are now one step away from a Co. Final.
These are four good honest teams take my word for it, they all want to be in the Final for 2012, and despite the fact some might say "it's only Junior C" it's of huge importance to these players, as is the Junior A, B and C1 to the respective hurlers involved.

Good Luck to all!
